YouTube announces YouTube Signature Devices that deliver best video-watching experience

YouTube has released a list of smartphones, called ‘YouTube Signature Devices’, which can deliver the “best-in-class YouTube experience” by combining next-gen technologies, video performance, and reliability.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is the latest smartphone to make a cut into the list. With a Signature Device, users can enjoy HDR videos, immersive 360-degree video, and fast video load times - all while using less bandwidth. To qualify as a Signature Device, YouTube said that a phone must support high dynamic range, high frame rate, reliable DRM performance, 4K decoding and use next generation video codecs. “We’ve worked with manufacturers to verify these devices meet or exceed our performance expectations. From YouTube TV to rental movies, Signature Devices seamlessly stream premium content without disrupting your viewing experience,” YouTube said in a statement.

According to the Google-owned video hosting platform, a phone must have the following features to be a ‘YouTube Signature Devices’.

High dynamic range: With support for High Dynamic Range (HDR), users can see videos that are richer in detail, with true-to-life colors. HDR capabilities allow a phone to display greater contrast, so that users can see details of a videos. 360-degree video: Basically devices should deliver seamless viewing experience through on-screen controls or through a VR headset.

4K decoding: While some devices display 4K on their screens, 4K decoding ensures that users will see videos in high resolution and clarity on VR.

High frame rate:Support for high frame rate (anything greater than 60 frames per second) means users get a super smooth video playback. Next generation codecs: With these supported devices, users can watch high resolution videos on YouTube while using up to 30 percent less bandwidth.

The 2019 Signature Devices are built with hardware VP9 profile 2 decoding, an advanced video codec technology. The current list of YouTube Signature Devices includes: Samsung Galaxy Note 9, Samsung Galaxy S9, Samsung Galaxy S9+, Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Samsung Galaxy S8, Samsung Galaxy S8+, OnePlus 6, Xiaomi Mi 8, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Sony Xperia XZ2, Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium, Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, Google Pixel 2, Google Pixel 2 XL, Nokia 8 Sirocco, LG V30 and HTC U12+.
